New Entrance at St. Mark’s

Dear Friends,

From now on we will be using the entrance which gives more direct access to our space, and that is where you will find the doorbell.  Instead of the main entrance off the parking lot, we will be using the first door that you come to off the parking lot. See you there!

Please reply to this email if you will be attending so that we can have numbers for set-up.  All are welcome from near and far, whether members of the Portland Branch or not.

Dear  Friends,

As you know our Pentecost Annual Gathering and Potluck was postponed, and now will be held at St. Johns time with Astrid Stegmann-Schmidt. We are excited to have you join us for this special once-a-year event!  Astrid will offer two presentations:

That Good May Become….

This first lecture will focus on the signs of the times. Where are we heading? Does anyone know?  What beings are behind this race towards digitalization? Did Ahriman incarnate already? What did Rudolf Steiner bring at the Christmas Conference to give us strength through Anthroposophy to face the future and empower us to do the good.

Threshold Experiences

During this time of the Consciousness Soul Age humanity is experiencing the crossing of the Threshold to the Spiritual World unconsciously. What does that mean for all of us? How can we prepare for the necessity to enter the etheric realm when crossing?

10:30 am Opening, Eurythmy with James Knight

10:45 am That Good May Become with Astrid

12:15 pm Potluck

1:00 pm   Council Report, feedback from members

1:45 pm  Threshold Experiences with Astrid

3:15 pm  Closing Eurythmy with James Knight

Saint Johns Presiding  Angel  -The Time of Uriel

Rudolf Steiner used a blackboard drawing to describe the dominion of the Archangel Uriel during high summer, and St. Johns as an imagination of the Trinity. So much more is represented in this drawing, and the painting based on it by Margarita Woloschina, as he describes in The Four Seasons and the Archangels.

In The St. Johns Imagination Dr. Steiner describes how, during St. Johns, the earth is at its zenith, having breathed its soul out into the cosmos with the Christ, the elementals and other spiritual beings. From this point on they will begin their descent back to the earth, bringing with them the all-important cosmic/sun influences they have taken in.

As noted in an address given on Sunday 23rd June 2019 at Emerson College, “Rudolf Steiner, in a lecture given on 12th October 1923, said that the great archangel most associated with this time of year is Uriel: and that Uriel directs his countenance and clear piercing gaze down towards the Earth and perceives disturbing shapes which continually gather and dissolve, gather and dissolve again. These shapes, Steiner says, are ‘human errors upon which Uriel directs his earnest gaze. Here during the height of summer, the imperfections of mankind are searchingly surveyed and contrasted with the morality implicit in the natural world. Now we see how at midsummer human errors are woven into the regular crystals which are formed in the normal course of Nature. On the other hand, all that is human virtue and human excellence rises up with silver-gleaming lines and are seen as the clouds that envelop Uriel’. So, midsummer is a time when, under the gaze of Uriel, the spiritual world looks with especial closeness at our human actions and motivations. This is a good time of year for us to do the same and look closely at what we humans are doing in the world…”

New Editor for the Portland Branch Newsletter!

Dear Members and Friends of the Portland Branch,

When I became editor of the Branch newsletter in 2012, I took seriously its

mission - that of continuing to build up the connective tissue between

Branch initiatives, individual initiatives, and members, contributing to an

evolving, healthy community in service to anthroposophy. Over time

readership expanded to a list of more than 500, and the feeling of

responsibility increased.

From the beginning it has been a labor of love which has not only helped to

develop the community over time, but also contributed greatly to my own

development. For all of this I am grateful, as I am to Chris Guilfoil, who

stepped in, out of love, to improve the artistic appearance of the newsletter,

and later for a time as editor.

I am grateful to the many others who have been on the team at times, in no

particular order: Wes Burch, Jeremy Davis, James Knight, Sara Genta,

Kathy Rem, Seth Miller, Lauren Johnson, Ruth Klein, Angelica Hesse, Anya

Thaker (please forgive if I’ve left anyone out). And great gratitude also to

the many contributors of content, including those who entrusted promotion

of their events to our care. Gratitude is also owed to previous editors, Tom

and Ruth Klein, and James Lee, who were at the helm at a time when the

newsletters were printed and mailed out, which continued for a time under

my watch until the technology evolved to allow for a very different format.

The time has come to turn my attention to other matters (including yes,

more time with family – and my first grandson), and to make way for a new

and able impulse. Council member Kathy Rem is taking the helm beginning with this

issue, June 2024. Her depth of experience and enthusiasm make it an

easy transition for both of us, and I thank her from the bottom of my heart.

With deep affection for all those of you who have traveled this road with me.

…Valerie Hope

The Portland Biodynamic Stirrers were at it again.

In May we stirred BD #501 – also called Horn Silica. Applied in early morning. It is an aid to photosynthesis and enhances flavor and nutritive qualities of plants. It also supports the keeping capacity (longevity after harvest) of vegetables, fruits and flowers. As usual, the group had many observations, lots of laughs, and delicious yummies and drink. Thank you Denise for organizing these events for the good of the earth.

For those who can’t participate in stirring but would like the preparations spread on their land/potted plants/tiniest patch of soil, please contact Denise at deeprootsfarm@harbornet.com and we will try to arrange delivery of the activated preparations to you. You do not need to have a farm or a garden to use and benefit from the preparations. If you are interested in getting on the Portland BD Stirrers email list for notifications of events, email the address in this paragraph
