| Please enter quietly and come as early as 6:45pm if you wish to light candle(s) and place pictures or memorabilia on the table for those you know who are now across the Threshold.
We will open with eurythmy and a verse, then speak aloud the names of our (not really) departed loved ones, read to them, and close with eurythmy and a verse. As many people like to remain for a while in silence, please leave quietly.
Once again, our evening will graciously be set to music by harpist Jean Madden. |

| In keeping with this month that we dedicate to gratitude, to thanksgiving: Rudolf Steiner tells us that in cultivating our relationship to the dead with whom we have karmic connections, gratitude is the common spiritual air in which we can meet. That is, we can consciously cultivate gratitude toward every impression in our lives, no matter whether pleasant or unpleasant, realizing that our entire life is a gift. In addition, we experience thankfulness that the ‘dead’ people have been in our lives, without wishing that they were back in this life with us. Although we may consciously feel antipathy towards an impression made on us, this is not so in our subconscious, which develops a certain feeling of gratitude toward every impression. The simple reason for this feeling is that everything in life which approaches the deeper element of our being enriches our life, really enriches it, including all unpleasant experiences. |

MATCHING GRANT A healthy social life is found only when, in the mirror of each soul, the whole community finds its reflection, and when, in the whole community, the virtue of each one is living.
This verse niggled at me each time I thought about reaching out to you regarding the matching grant. Imagine that mirror reflecting ourselves in every human being encountered. Do you see all the flaws tangled up in the shadows or all the beauty shining out towards the world. I suppose we all see a little of both and what a blessing that is to have those reflections showing our collective true virtues. Virtues, not being a shadow, but the highest goodness in us.
I hope that supporting your commnity, the Portland Anthroposophical Branch, has helped you achieve some goals, inspired the striving for initiatives in the community, in your personal life, or in that ever-deepening discovery of O MAN, KNOW THYSELF.
That leads me to the second Rudolf Steiner quote I cannot seem to get out of my head:
Spirit is never without matter, matter is never without spirit.
In the realm of money, this quote speaks to me about giving. Giving is one of the highest forms of morality, as is receiving. Giving requires a sacrifice of one’s self. Receiving accepts the sacrifice as something to pass on. In holding onto it, it becomes a shadow. In passing it forward it recognizes the spiritual nature. It redeems the matter from the hardness that can be acquired and frees the spiritual to live on.
So now I am led to explaining our $4,000 matching grant in the following paragraph and, with a disappointed heart, let you know that we are sadly lacking in reaching our goal this year. I invite you to take up the challenge during this Michaelic time and set free a bit of the spiritual matter you have. It will be gratefully received and passed on over and over again to sustain our activities in the Branch Library.
The gift of our 2025 matching grant is intended to go towards paying the rent of $8,000 per year for the beautiful space that is our Portland Branch of the Anthroposophical Society. Our community donates $4,000 and the grant matches the $4,000 hence we can look forward to our lovely events knowing the rent is paid. This has been a blessing to us and may not always be available. Fundraising is always the nature of nonprofits and ours is a unique one in that our whole community supports making anthroposophy available to everyone. How nice is it to have a place to go, listen to lectures, have workshops, pick a book (or six) from the library shelves? We are grateful for all your gifts to the branch. Please specify if your donation is intended to be put towards the matching grant. This allows us to reflect your wishes more accurately.
With gratitude for your support, Kathy Rem Treasurer for the Portland Branch of the Anthroposophic Society Update as of September 2025 |

“Space in Turbulence ” Submitted by Patricia Lynch Mixed media A group of five artists meet regularly and experiment on working together. In this experiment we all began a painting and then rotated around spending time working on each other’s paintings. Many mediums were used, watercolor, collage, oil paint, charcoal etc. We returned to our original painting and proceeded to bring things to a balanced, aesthetic place. All the time acknowledging what others bring to our lives. |

REQUIREMENTS FOR NEWSLETTER SUBMISSIONS
We are happy to promote local activities in this newsletter, which is a primary purpose of this publication. We want to thank our community members for sharing your local events, and advertising your anthroposophical initiatives here.
Because there are so many anthroposophical initiatives from outside the Portland Metro area that have asked to be included, your Branch Council has worked to clarify the parameters for placing an ad or community event in the monthly newsletter. We have had feedback asking us to keep it from getting too long. We hope the guidelines below will be helpful.
1. All events or services offered should be local within the Portland area.
2. If a registration fee is required, or there is a charge for services, that will be considered advertising.
3. The fee for advertising is $10 per ad or $100 per year. This helps to cover our newsletter costs, and rent for the Library/Community space.
4. Local community events that are free will not require an advertising fee.
5. Flyers need to be jpg or png ready. Keep in mind that small print will not read well when placed in the newsletter. Make your font bold and big - font size should be a minimum of 16 point.
6. Calendar announcements can be sent directly to newsletter editor Kathy Rem.
You may contact Kathy if you have any questions – kathyrem@gmail.com |

ANTHROPOSOPHY.SOCIAL
Dear Colleagues of the Social Sciences Section, Vivianne Sinclaire and Timothy Kennedy, along with other contributors, initiated a new private community research platform for those who are engaged with Anthroposophy and invite you to collaborate! Together, we can support one another to develop skills to meet the current challenges in hopes of a healthier future at this important juncture in humanity's evolutionary trajectory.
As a platform supported by a minimal subscription fee of $3.64/month for current members of the Anthroposophical Society and/or Youth Section members, Anthroposophy.Social offers a tool to bridge between live meetings, recordings, links to further research and readings, and searchable dialogues in private or whole community spaces. It is also open to members of the anthroposophical movement who have not yet found their way to join the Society at a regular subscription of $12/month - so the Society members get a discount of 70% or more than $100/year. It is a paid platform so that the content of anyone's activity on the site can remain private and personal - never aggregated, sold, or marketed to by outside corporate interests. And having a paid platform helps overcome the temptation of most platforms to survive off maximizing engagement. Our goal is to maximize the effectiveness and health of the members' engagement so that they can maximize their in-person engagement.
In general, here are a few of the things you will be able to do with a community membership portal in Anthroposophy.Social: Share yourself, your skills, your research interests, your needs, and the initiatives that you are associated with, in relationship to Anthroposophy, so others learn about you and connect. Join weekly "Awakening to One Another Meetings" and small group circles to come to know one another through mutual sharing, inquiry, reflection, and visioning in light of Anthroposophy. Join or Initiate Ongoing Conversations/Presentations/Studies/Research with Members to Reinforce Learning and Growth. Share or find events, classes, study groups, apprenticeships, items for sale or free, places to stay, and more. Contribute to and Learn from a Shared Resource Library Join Capacity Building Courses: Free Foundational Courses and Paid Specialty Building Courses like Goethean Conversation, Spiritual Biography Research, Crossing Care and Preparation, Healthier Online Practices, Associative Economics, The Science of Collaborative Initiation, Transforming Evil in our times, and more.
Discount Code for Current Members of the Society or the Youth Section: ASYSDISCOUNT2
To learn more or to join, visit anthroposophy.social or anthroposophysocial.com Reach out to Timothy or Vivianne at anthroposophysocial@gmail.com. We hope to “see” you there! |
